The African Leadership University aims to develop 3 million ethical and entrepreneurial leaders for Africa and the world by 2035. It uses a personalized, student-driven, project-based, and mission-oriented approach to create agile, lifelong learners who can adapt to a changing world. ALU's first site was inaugurated in September 2015 in Mauritius. It now has sites in Rwanda and Kenya, and is rolling out several more over the next few years.ALU’s aligned mission to develop the next generation of leaders through an international university experience developing 21st-century skills to facilitate continuous innovation and bring a global perspective back to their communities was the obvious partner for the first scholarship. The scholars benefit from ALU’s unique approach to education, spending their first 8 months developing their leadership skills and then pursuing degrees in Computer Science, Entrepreneurship, Global Challenges, or International Business and Trade. Each summer, the scholars spend time participating in an internship, which is a core part of the ALU curriculum. ALU is pioneering a fresh approach to higher education in the 21st century; offering accredited undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive education programs in a unique and imaginative way. By integrating students’ learning with the real world, empowering students to take ownership of their own learning, equipping each student to think entrepreneurially, and employing the most engaging and inspiring teaching methods, ALU is pioneering a new take on higher education and leadership development.

ALU’s vision is supported by Rwanda’s innovative and forward-thinking approach to education as a growing hub for Higher Education in Africa. ALU Rwanda is located in Kigali Heights where it will have its offices, learning spaces, and other educational facilities. Students in this vibrant community have the unique opportunity to explore Kigali and make the city their campus.

All undergraduate degree programs are accredited by the Higher Education Council of Rwanda and incorporate ALU’s innovative Learning Model, which focuses on high-quality and engaging learning that develops skills for the world of tomorrow. In addition to their university studies and internships, Kuumba scholars are partnered with a mentor from a network of young professionals who will support the student during their studies and professional growth.
